Europe Releases 42 Million Barrels of Oil to Lower Prices

European Union nations will release 42 million barrels of oil reserves over three months to reduce fuel costs, with France contributing 10 million barrels of diesel.

The European Union will release 42 million barrels of oil reserves into the market over the next three months to lower fuel prices. France's Economy Minister Roland Lescure announced the plan ahead of a meeting of European Union energy ministers in Luxembourg, specifying that half of the total volume will consist of diesel.

As part of this effort, France will release 10 million barrels of diesel at cost price in the coming days. Lescure expects this specific action to reduce prices by 12 to 18 cents per liter as early as next week. He noted that diesel is "at the heart of our challenges," while stating that Europe remains open to further stockpile releases if the energy crisis persists.

This initiative follows a Group of Seven agreement last month to release up to 100 million barrels. These actions build upon a larger 400-million-barrel release coordinated by the International Energy Agency in March.
