Senator Roger Marshall Pays Six-Year-Old Bakery Bill After Viral Post

Senator Roger Marshall paid a six-year-old unpaid bakery bill for a 2020 campaign party after the owner posted the invoice on social media.

U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, a Republican seeking re-election in Kansas, paid a six-year-old unpaid bakery bill after the debt became a viral social media story. The original invoice for $678.75 covered cookies, muffins, and brownies provided for Marshall's 2020 primary night watch party.

Holly Thomas, owner of Holly’s Sweet Treats, posted the unpaid invoice on Facebook on Thursday, noting that repeated requests for payment had been ignored. Marshall responded by paying $1,300 to the bakery, which he claimed was double the original amount, and apologized for the oversight.

The incident, which the campaign of Democratic opponent Rev. Adam Hamilton labeled "Cookiegate," comes as Marshall faces a tight race and scrutiny over previous reports that he filed lawsuits against more than 700 former medical patients for outstanding bills. While Thomas acknowledged the payment was the right action, she stated she still does not intend to vote for the senator.
