US Assistant Secretary Frank Garcia Strengthens Nigeria Strategic Ties

US Assistant Secretary of State Frank Garcia met with Nigerian diplomatic and military leaders in Abuja to enhance counter-terrorism, trade, and regional security cooperation.

United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia led a high-level delegation to Abuja from July 13 to 14, 2026, to reaffirm the strategic partnership between the United States and Nigeria. The visit, Garcia's first since taking office on June 1, was part of a broader West African diplomatic tour including stops in Mali and Côte d’Ivoire.

During the mission, Garcia met with Nigerian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sola Enikanolaiye to pledge closer collaboration on trade, investment, health, technology, and maritime security. Both nations emphasized the importance of regional stability, specifically within the Lake Chad Basin and the Gulf of Guinea. Minister Enikanolaiye used the talks to clarify that Nigeria's security challenges are not a result of religious persecution or genocide.

Security and defense cooperation formed the core of the subsequent engagements. National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu hosted Garcia to review progress under the Nigeria-US Joint Working Group and discuss mutual security priorities. Additionally, General Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Defence Staff, met with Garcia at the Defence Headquarters to coordinate efforts against terrorism, violent extremism, and transnational organized crime. The officials acknowledged the role of U.S. intelligence sharing and military training in these efforts. The two countries agreed to maintain regular consultations and are planning a follow-up bilateral engagement in Washington DC in August 2026.
