Pittsburgh Regional Transit Wins $9 Million University Line Grant

The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission awarded Pittsburgh Regional Transit $9 million to extend the University Line project from Squirrel Hill to the Pittsburgh side of the Homestead Grays Bridge. This grant follows a previous $7.4 million award in 2023, bringing the agency closer to its projected cost estimate of $28 million to $35 million for the Squirrel Hill branch.

With approximately 60% of construction funding now secured, the project will include potential upgrades to six station pairs. Planned improvements feature the installation of security cameras, arrival screens, and fare vending machines.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit will spend the next 12 to 18 months focused on the planning and design of the Murray and Forbes Avenue sections. The agency intends to hold public meetings to gather community feedback during this phase. This expansion serves as a precursor to a separate project that will eventually connect the line to Homestead and McKeesport.
