Nyesom Wike Bans Commercial Tricycles and Motorcycles in Abuja

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike banned the operation of commercial tricycles (Keke Napep) and motorcycles (Okada) within the Abuja city centre. The decision followed a Federal Capital Territory Security Council meeting where intelligence reports linked these vehicles to criminal activities and banditry. Wike characterized the transport modes as both a public nuisance and a security threat.

While Wike acknowledged that a blanket ban across the entire Federal Capital Territory would be impractical, he directed security agencies to map out high-risk zones for restriction. He has since signed approvals to provide logistical support for the execution of these targeted restrictions.

In a separate directive, Wike announced that the administration will continue removing beggars and destitute persons from the city. He rejected proposals to provide government-funded shelters, arguing that such accommodations would incentivize further migration into the capital from neighboring states, including Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, and Kaduna.
