LG Display Unveils FLiPP OLED Technology to Replace Metal Masks
LG Display introduced FLiPP technology at IMID 2026, using UV photolithography to increase OLED brightness and lifespan while reducing power consumption.
LG Display unveiled FLiPP (FMM-Less innovative Pixel Patterning) at the 26th International Meeting on Information Display (IMID 2026) in Busan, South Korea. The new manufacturing method replaces traditional fine metal masks (FMM) with UV photolithography and precision etching, eliminating the sagging and alignment defects common in metal stencils on larger substrates.
This process increases the pixel aperture ratio by approximately 55%, resulting in 1.6 times higher brightness, a 2.4 times longer operational lifespan, and a 13% reduction in power consumption. By enabling direct RGB patterning on full 8.5th-generation mother glass substrates, the technology improves substrate utilization efficiency by up to 64%. LG Display intends to apply FLiPP to a range of products from 1-inch wearables to 100-inch televisions, though it will prioritize IT displays such as monitors and tablets first.
The company plans to invest 3 trillion won (approximately $2.1 billion USD) to commercialize the technology, with an expansion into televisions expected by late 2027. During the same event, LG Display's Hyper Double Scanning technology received the Display of the Year Award. Simultaneously, Samsung Display presented its Wide View foldable panel technology and a 20-inch stretchable display.
