Apple Trains Proprietary AI Model for Chinese Market

Apple developed a proprietary large language model with Alibaba Group to launch Apple Intelligence in China following regulatory approval from Beijing.

Apple has trained a proprietary large language model specifically for the Chinese market, marking a strategic shift from its previous reliance on third-party domestic models. Developed with support from Alibaba Group, the model is part of a dual-track strategy designed to navigate strict regulatory hurdles and reclaim market share from local competitors such as Huawei.

The Cyberspace Administration of China recently registered Apple's generative AI service, making Apple the first foreign company approved by Beijing to offer a proprietary AI model in China. This registration clears the way for the launch of Apple Intelligence on compatible devices in the coming months.

To supplement its own model, Apple will incorporate Alibaba's Qwen model and technology from Baidu into its Chinese AI offerings. This approach allows the company to provide AI features in a region where U.S.-based models like ChatGPT and Claude remain unavailable.
