Henry Blodget Warns AI Investment Boom Mirrors Dot-Com Bubble
Henry Blodget warns that explosive growth and high leverage in the AI sector could trigger a major recession similar to the 2008 financial crisis.
Henry Blodget, cofounder and former CEO of Business Insider, warns that the current artificial intelligence investment boom exhibits characteristics of the dot-com bubble and the 2008 financial crisis. He argues that while AI will fundamentally transform the economy, the cycle is driven by a dangerous combination of explosive growth and high leverage that will likely end in a significant bust.
Blodget points to massive revenue figures as evidence of strong demand, noting that Anthropic has reached an annualized revenue of $65 billion and OpenAI is generating $40 billion. However, he identifies risky financial behaviors across the industry, including Alphabet Inc. increasing off-balance sheet commitments by nearly $500 billion and burning cash in the second quarter.
Further concerns center on Nvidia, which Blodget describes as engaging in circular financing deals. These include providing $105 billion in credit for a data center and investing $30 billion in OpenAI. Blodget suggests that once supply catches up with demand and leverage maxes out, the resulting crash could trigger a major recession because AI currently contributes so significantly to United States economic growth.
