Oxfordshire Leaders Demand Pause on AI Data Centre Expansion

Local officials and members of Parliament in Oxfordshire are demanding a pause on the expansion of data centres following the approval of a 103,605sqm facility in Graven Hill. The surge in developments, driven by the AI industry, has sparked warnings from leaders who argue that these facilities threaten local infrastructure, specifically electric power capacity and water supplies during an ongoing hosepipe ban.

Ian Middleton, the County Green leader and Cherwell councillor, contends that central government is pushing through planning approvals without adequate cumulative impact assessments. Other proposed sites in Didcot, Shilton, and Kidlington have faced similar objections regarding biodiversity and grid stability. MP Calum Miller has urged government ministers to ensure residents can comment on proposals that place high demands on local utilities.

The Government of the United Kingdom defends the facilities as vital for economic growth and claims that designated AI Growth Zones promote clean power generation. However, local critics argue that the race to invest in AI may come at the expense of future wellbeing and environmental goals, potentially undermining fossil fuel reduction efforts.
