Pakistan Borrows 763 Million Dollars in External Assistance

The Government of Pakistan borrowed approximately Rs215 billion in external financial assistance during July 2026, marking the start of the 2026-27 fiscal year. The total amount, equivalent to over $763 million, comprises roughly Rs210 billion in loans and Rs5 billion in grants.

This borrowing represents a 10% increase compared to July of the previous year, though it is a sharp 81% decline from June 2026, when assistance exceeded $4 billion. Funding was sourced from a mix of multilateral, bilateral, and certificate-based instruments.

Naya Pakistan Certificates raised $343.9 million, while multilateral institutions provided $252.8 million. The World Bank Group contributed the largest multilateral share at $130 million, followed by the Asian Development Bank with $59.1 million. Bilateral assistance totaled $146.6 million in guaranteed loans from the Government of China, with additional smaller contributions from Germany and Saudi Arabia.
