Isle of Wight Council Rejects New Parking Charges
The Isle of Wight Council rejected plans to introduce new parking charges following a 2,300-signature petition, though existing fee increases remain under consideration.
The Isle of Wight Council Economy, Regeneration, Transport and Infrastructure Committee voted on October 6, 2026, to reject proposals that would have introduced new parking charges at several sites currently offering free parking. The rejected plan targeted various locations across the island, including Union Street in Ryde, Sandown High Street, Regent Street in Shanklin, and the Royal Exchange Car Park in Newport, as well as areas in Yarmouth, Ventnor, Wroxall, and Brighstone.
The decision followed a public petition against the charges that gathered more than 2,300 signatures. The initial proposals were authored by Strategic Director of Community Services Simon Moon to address a challenging budget climate where rising costs have outpaced income and funding increases.
While the committee blocked the creation of new charging zones, it agreed to move forward with a separate proposal to increase existing on- and off-street parking fees by 25p per hour. This measure, along with a proposal to remove free parking for electric vehicles in off-street car parks, will now proceed to the Policy, Finance and Resources Committee for consideration. Council officials identify these financial challenges as the primary risk to the sustainability of public services.
