Banking and Healthcare Firms Outbid Tech Companies for AI Talent
Non-technology employers in banking and healthcare are paying higher salaries for software engineers to secure AI talent amid widespread tech sector layoffs.
Non-technology employers in the banking and healthcare sectors are outbidding technology firms for software engineers to secure critical AI talent. Research from Randstad NV shows that healthcare and life sciences companies are paying up to 17% more for software engineers than tech companies, while banking firms are offering 13% more. This competition follows a fivefold increase in job postings requiring AI capabilities over the past year.
The shift is accelerated by significant workforce reductions within the technology sector. In the first nine months of 2026, U.S. tech companies announced 165,925 job cuts, representing a 54% increase over the same period in 2025. Major firms contributing to this available talent pool include Microsoft, Oracle, Meta Platforms Incorporated, and Block, all of which implemented substantial cuts.
Approximately 55% of surveyed non-tech organizations reported recruiting workers specifically following these industry layoffs. Randstad NV noted that these businesses see massive potential in AI, realizing business cases that they were not able to realize before.
