Malaysia Builds Silicon Island to Expand Semiconductor Capacity

Malaysia is constructing a 2,300-acre man-made island south of Penang to grow its semiconductor and artificial intelligence industries and create 220,000 jobs by 2050.

The Government of Malaysia is constructing a 2,300-acre man-made land mass called Silicon Island south of Penang to expand its capacity in the global semiconductor and artificial intelligence industries. The project utilizes large-scale land reclamation involving offshore dredgers and fill to create the new territory off the northwest coast.

Once completed over the next decade, the development is expected to add hundreds of billions of dollars to the national economy and create approximately 220,000 jobs by 2050. The island is designed as a mixed-use hub, combining industrial facilities with office towers, hotels, and waterfront apartments to support the growing tech ecosystem.
