Google and Other Labs Launch AI Program for Pacific Newsrooms
Google and Other Labs launched an 18-month training program after research revealed Pacific newsrooms lack formal AI strategies and face regional language barriers.
A study by Other Labs and Google found that while artificial intelligence is widely used across 42 newsrooms in 11 Pacific countries, most organizations operate without formal strategies or audit trails for confidential data. The research highlighted significant gaps in formal training and the poor performance of major AI tools when processing Pacific languages.
In response, Google and Other Labs launched the News AI Lab, an 18-month program providing 19 news organizations in the Pacific and New Zealand with mentorship, safety training, and AI accounts. The initiative aims to help publishers integrate the technology into their business models while establishing safe internal policies.
Parallel to these efforts, technology expert Kevyn Wahuzue warned that Pacific newsrooms risk becoming passive consumers of systems designed outside their region. Wahuzue noted that current models often blend distinct Pacific cultures or produce "fluent mistakes" that appear correct but are factually wrong. He urged the region to develop localized AI tools grounded in regional archives rather than the open web.
While the News AI Lab focuses on integration, Wahuzue emphasized that reporting and verification must remain human-led. He argued that news organizations cannot outsource responsibility for inaccuracies to AI and should treat AI outputs as tips rather than established facts.
