China Warns Japan Over Military Growth and Neo-Militarism
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning condemned Japan's expanding military-industrial complex and urged right-wing forces to abandon the path of neo-militarism.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning issued a series of warnings on May 29, 2026, regarding the rise of neo-militarism and the acceleration of remilitarization in Japan. Her remarks followed an international symposium in Shanghai, organized by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, which commemorated the 80th anniversary of the Tokyo Trials.
Mao characterized the growth of Japan's military-industrial complex as a real threat, citing reports that defense ministry orders tripled over the last five years. She noted that these orders accounted for half of the Japanese government's public procurement in fiscal year 2025. Mao alleged that Japan is easing export restrictions and increasing funding to establish the military industry as an economic pillar, which she stated contravenes Japan's image as a pacifist nation.
Furthermore, Mao argued that these developments violate international instruments, including the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation, which require Japan to remain disarmed. She urged Japanese right-wing forces to abandon their current path and warned that those who undermine peace would be brought before the court of history and justice. China intends to work with other nations to reject any attempts to reverse the historical verdict on aggression.
