Democrats Outline Energy Oversight Priorities Ahead of Midterms

Democratic lawmakers are preparing legislative and oversight probes into Trump administration energy deals and regulatory changes if they win a House majority in November.

Democratic lawmakers are outlining a series of legislative and oversight priorities in anticipation of potentially winning a House majority in the November 3 midterms. The Democratic Party intends to launch investigations into several Trump administration energy policies, specifically targeting a deal for U.S. majority control of 17 Venezuelan oilfields through North American Blue Energy Partners.

Lawmakers also plan to scrutinize the administration's practice of taking equity stakes in critical minerals companies and the termination of $7.6 billion in clean energy grants. Further oversight will focus on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, specifically regarding its independence following the 2025 termination of Commissioner Christopher Hanson.

In addition to these probes, members of the House Energy & Commerce Committee are pushing for stricter environmental safeguards and grid-cost requirements for data centers. Some lawmakers have proposed a moratorium on new data center construction until these guardrails are established.
