SIDBI Expands MSME Credit and Branch Network Across India

Small Industries Development Bank of India increased direct lending to MSMEs and opened 71 new branches to expand financial access for smaller enterprises.

The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) significantly expanded its financial support for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through a combination of increased lending and physical infrastructure growth. Between April 2024 and July 2026, the bank opened 71 new branches to better serve major MSME clusters. Direct credit sanctions grew from Rs 6,124 crore in FY 2021-22 to Rs 24,323 crore in FY 2025-26, with the direct credit outstanding portfolio reaching Rs 51,687 crore by March 31, 2026.

Beyond direct loans, the bank grew its indirect lending through refinance and on-lending to banks, NBFCs, SFBs, and MFIs, with the refinance outstanding portfolio for Primary Lending Institutions increasing 16.9% to Rs 4,50,571 crore. Digital accessibility has been prioritized through the GST Sahay application for invoice-based credit, participation in five Trade Receivables Discounting System platforms, and the Prayaas Scheme for informal micro-entrepreneurs.

Additional government efforts to bolster the sector include the Modernization of Rural Enterprises programme and the SIDBI Cluster Development Fund. In May 2026, the Government of India introduced the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) 5.0, aiming to provide an additional credit flow of Rs 2.55 lakh crore to MSMEs, non-MSMEs, and scheduled passenger airlines.
