Australian EV Drivers Save $76 Million Amid Fuel Crisis

Australians who transitioned to electric vehicles in the first half of 2026 are projected to save a combined $76 million on fuel by the end of the year. This surge in adoption followed a significant fuel price spike triggered by the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which occurred after February attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel.

According to a report by the National Automotive Leasing and Salary Packaging Association (NALSPA), drivers utilizing novated leases and the federal government's Electric Car Discount could see annual savings reach $103.6 million from 2027 onwards, provided fuel prices remain at $2.10 per litre. The highest savings were reported in New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland.

NALSPA chief executive Rohan Martin stated that the transition to electric vehicles strengthens national energy security and provides essential relief to households during a cost-of-living crisis. He noted that the federal discount helps working Australians save thousands of dollars on vehicle costs while avoiding the price shocks associated with traditional fuel stations.
