Asda Appoints Former Morrisons CEO David Potts as Chief Executive
Asda has appointed former Morrisons CEO David Potts as chief executive to combat sliding sales and intense competition from Aldi.
Asda has appointed David Potts, the former chief executive of Morrisons, as its new chief executive with immediate effect. Potts takes the helm of the United Kingdom's third-largest supermarket as the company struggles with falling sales and aggressive competition from Aldi, which is currently close to overtaking Asda in market share.
As part of the leadership transition, executive chair Allan Leighton is moving into a non-executive role to focus on the company's long-term strategic agenda. Leighton noted that the business has spent the last two years stabilizing and implementing a Formula for Growth strategy to establish the chain as more than a supermarket.
Potts, who also previously held leadership positions at Tesco, intends to revitalize the business by focusing on value for families. He stated that the company has a clear focus on keeping prices low during the Christmas period to benefit customers and stakeholders. Asda was acquired in 2020 by TDR Capital and the Issa brothers.
