Travelodge CEO Resigns After Security Failures Led to Assaults

Travelodge Chief Executive Joanna Boydell resigned following security breaches that allowed attackers to gain room access, prompting a company-wide safety overhaul.

Travelodge Chief Executive Joanna Boydell has resigned following a series of security failures that left female guests vulnerable to assault. The resignation follows a high-profile case in Maidenhead, Berkshire, where a man received a room key by mistake and sexually assaulted a guest in 2022, resulting in a seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence. A separate incident in London involved staff providing a room key to a woman's domestic abuser.

Chief Financial Officer Ray Reidy has assumed the role of interim Chief Executive. In response to the failings, Travelodge is implementing a safety overhaul that includes installing secondary deadbolts in all UK rooms and training 12,000 staff members. The company has also introduced a new room access policy requiring explicit guest permission before replacement keys are issued.

To address systemic issues, the company commissioned an independent review by Paul Greaney KC and is collaborating with UKHospitality to update security guidelines for the wider hotel industry. These developments follow previous pressure from former Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who had urged Boydell to engage with MPs regarding women's safety concerns.
