AI Bot Created by Jeffrey Liang Wins Metaculus Cup

An artificial intelligence bot developed by Jeffrey Liang won the seasonal Metaculus Cup on September 5, the first time an AI has secured first place in the competition. The bot outperformed four startups that had collectively raised more than 15 million dollars, despite Liang spending only a few thousand dollars and less than 150 hours on the project.

Other AI systems claimed second and fifth place, while humans occupied third and fourth. Participants were required to predict a range of outcomes, including Brent crude oil prices, the impact of a hantavirus outbreak, and potential data-center restrictions in the United States or European Union.

While the scaling of large language models has allowed AI systems to reach parity with human superforecasters on many tasks, some experts maintain that human judgment still holds an advantage for long-term forecasts spanning several years.
