Anthropic Forms In-House Silicon Team to Design Custom AI Chips

Anthropic is creating an internal silicon team to develop custom hardware for its Claude AI model while maintaining a multi-chip supplier strategy.

Anthropic is establishing an in-house silicon team to design custom AI chips specifically for its Claude AI model. This strategic move aims to address surging demand and improve operational efficiency by co-designing hardware and models to ensure Claude runs faster and at the scale customers require.

Despite the development of proprietary silicon, the company will maintain a multi-chip approach. Anthropic will continue to rely on hardware from Amazon Web Services, Google, Nvidia, and AMD to support its scaling efforts. The company has reportedly held discussions with Samsung Electronics as a potential manufacturing partner for these custom chips.

This shift mirrors efforts by other industry leaders to reduce dependence on third-party providers. OpenAI previously developed a purpose-built semiconductor called Jalapeño in collaboration with Broadcom, and Meta Platforms Incorporated plans to put its next-generation AI chip into production in September.
