Delhi High Court Issues Notice Over Protest Ban

The Delhi High Court issued a notice regarding a petition by the Indian Youth Congress seeking the right to protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The Delhi High Court issued a notice on October 13 regarding a petition filed by the Indian Youth Congress seeking the right to protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The petition, filed by IYC President Uday Bhanu Chib, challenges the Delhi Police's rejection of a request to hold a peaceful demonstration of 100 to 150 people.

Chib argued that the denial was arbitrary and lacked a reasoned assessment. The petition specifically challenges a 2022 Standing Order, claiming the policy is used to disproportionately prohibit peaceful assemblies without individualized consideration.

During the hearing, the Additional Solicitor General opposed the notice, stating that Jantar Mantar had been de-notified as a protest site following Supreme Court orders. The government suggested alternative venues, including Ramlila Ground and Burari Ground. Justice Amit Mahajan issued notice on three specific prayers concerning the enforcement of the 2022 order and the requirement for reasoned assessments, listing the matter for further hearing on November 17.
