Community Monitoring Project Tracks Pollution at Meta Data Center

The Gulf States Newsroom launched a community monitoring project in Holly Ridge, Louisiana, to analyze air and water quality during the construction of Meta's Hyperion data center. Local residents report brown, disinfectant-smelling tap water and dust plumes that cause respiratory issues, forcing many to rely on bottled water.

Researchers from Louisiana State University are analyzing the project's data to help residents reduce personal exposure. This initiative follows criticism of state officials for a lack of transparency and the use of nondisclosure agreements regarding the project.

The effort faces legal hurdles under a 2024 Louisiana law that prohibits using community monitoring results to allege regulatory violations. The Louisiana Bucket Brigade characterized this legislation as an attempt by industry to avoid oversight.
