UK Proposes Most Significant Marriage Law Update in 200 Years

The Government of the United Kingdom has proposed the most significant update to English marriage laws in nearly 200 years. Launched via a public consultation on July 16, the reforms aim to allow legal wedding ceremonies in non-traditional settings, such as forests, beaches, gardens, castles, canal boats, and cruise ships.

Officials intend for these changes to lower the average cost of weddings, which currently exceed £20,000, by eliminating the need for expensive venue hires. The proposal also seeks to recognize more religious ceremonies legally, removing the requirement for some couples to hold two separate ceremonies to satisfy both religious and legal mandates.

Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary David Lammy described the current rules as archaic, stating that the reforms provide couples more freedom to marry on their own terms. Justice Minister Baroness Levitt KC added that the changes would untie outdated restrictions to ensure legal protection for diverse faith and cultural traditions.

The public consultation period remains open until September 24. To maintain the legal integrity of the institution, the government specified that officiants will be subject to strict requirements to ensure all ceremonies remain legally robust.
