India and China Review Border Peace at 35th WMCC Meeting
India and China held the 35th WMCC meeting in Beijing to discuss border management and the gradual normalization of bilateral relations following maintained peace along the LAC.
The Ministry of External Affairs of India and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China convened the 35th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on India-China Border Affairs in Beijing on May 27, 2026. Led by Indian Joint Secretary Sujit Ghosh and Chinese Director General Hou Yanqi, the delegations reviewed the situation along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.
Both nations described the discussions as "constructive and forward looking," expressing satisfaction that peace and tranquility in border areas are facilitating the gradual normalization of bilateral relations. Key agenda items included border management, delimitation, mechanism building, and cross-border cooperation. The Indian delegation specifically urged an early meeting of the expert-level mechanism on transboundary rivers to discuss hydrological data, though this point was omitted from the Chinese government's official statement.
To sustain this momentum, both sides agreed to maintain regular diplomatic and military contacts and will make substantive preparations for the next meeting of Special Representatives to be hosted by China. This diplomatic push follows an October 2024 disengagement pact for Depsang and Demchok and other normalization efforts, such as the resumption of direct flights and updated Indian foreign direct investment policies. Separately, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs rejected Chinese comments regarding Jammu and Kashmir found in a joint statement between China and Pakistan.
