EU Considers Sanctioning Irish Alumina Refinery Over Russian Supplies

The European Union is considering adding Aughinish Alumina, a refinery located in the west of Ireland, to its sanctions list. The refinery provides a significant portion of the alumina used by the Russian aluminium industry, which Russia utilizes to produce missiles for strikes against civilians in Kyiv.

This potential move highlights a contradiction in the Irish government's position. While Ireland generally supports European Union sanctions and provides financial aid to Ukraine, the continued operation of the refinery allows materials to flow into the Russian military industrial complex. The EU's deliberation focuses on closing this loophole to better support Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression.
