UN Report Criticizes Lack of Transparency in Afghan Security

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) released a report on August 10, 2026, criticizing the lack of transparency and accountability within Afghanistan's security institutions under the de facto authorities. While the report acknowledges that the authorities created internal monitoring units to address misconduct, it concludes these measures lack sufficient oversight.

UNAMA documented various arrests and investigations into security personnel, but noted that many complaints remain unresolved. The mission found that systemic barriers and a fear of reprisals discourage victims from reporting abuses, with women facing particular challenges in seeking justice.

To address these failures, UNAMA recommended that the authorities implement clear codes of conduct aligned with international standards. The mission also called for the establishment of safe, inclusive complaints mechanisms to protect whistleblowers and victims of misconduct.
