Colorado and Wyoming Open Low-Income Winter Heating Assistance

Colorado and Wyoming have announced application windows for federally funded programs providing winter heating assistance to residents earning below 60% of the state median income.

Several U.S. states are launching federally funded energy assistance programs to help low-income residents cover winter heating costs for the 2026-27 season. In Wyoming, the Wyoming Department of Family Services began accepting applications for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) on October 1, 2026. The program, funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, remains open through April 30, 2027.

Colorado will open its application window for the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) on November 1, 2026, with a closing date of April 30, 2027. Both states require applicants to have a gross annual income at or below 60% of the state median income to qualify. Benefit amounts are determined by factors such as income and the cost of the primary heating fuel.

Wyoming's program includes specific requirements for crisis assistance regarding broken furnaces or past-due bills, requiring verification of at least one energy bill payment made within the previous 60 days. Additionally, eligible electric customers in Indiana may apply for that state's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).
