Conservatives Propose Abolishing Natural England and Environment Agency

Victoria Atkins announced a Conservative Party plan to abolish Natural England and the Environment Agency to reduce bureaucracy and increase ministerial accountability.

Shadow Environment Secretary Victoria Atkins announced a Conservative Party proposal to abolish Natural England and the Environment Agency, transferring their responsibilities directly to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). Speaking at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham, Atkins described the move as the first stage of a year-long review of 34 arm's-length bodies within Defra.

Atkins argued that the restructuring will reduce bureaucracy for farmers and increase ministerial accountability, stating that the party wanted to "restructure Defra completely" to make the department more supportive of its constituents. The Conservatives have not yet detailed how specific regulatory functions, inspections, or enforcement will operate once absorbed into the department.

Reactions to the proposal are divided. The Countryside Alliance supports the shift toward in-house ministerial decision-making. However, environmental groups, including The Wildlife Trusts and River Action, warn that removing these independent regulators could increase the vulnerability of the United Kingdom to flooding, extreme weather, and biodiversity loss.
