Rob Sand Breaks Iowa Fundraising Records for Governor Race

Democratic candidate Rob Sand broke an Iowa state record for the most money raised by a statewide campaign in a single period, collecting more than $9.38 million between May 27 and July 14. The current state auditor now holds approximately $17.95 million in cash on hand, following a previous record-setting haul of $9.68 million raised during the first four and a half months of 2026.

Republican candidate Zach Lahn raised more than $6.3 million during the same May-July period. However, the Lahn campaign spent over $5.9 million of its funds, leaving approximately $1.04 million on hand. A significant portion of Lahn's fundraising came from the RGA Right Direction PAC, which contributed over $5 million through six large donations between June 5 and July 10.

National party groups have heavily invested in the open-seat race, as incumbent Governor Kim Reynolds is not seeking another term. In addition to the RGA contributions, the Democratic Governors Association donated $2.5 million to Sand on July 13. Despite the disparity in cash on hand, national forecasters from Inside Elections, the Cook Political Report, and Sabato’s Crystal Ball currently categorize the November 3 general election as a toss-up.
