S&P 500 Hits Record High Amid Fed Rate Speculation

U.S. equity markets rallied to record highs on August 7 as weak jobs data fueled expectations that the Federal Reserve will delay interest rate hikes.

The S&P 500 reached a record high on August 7, 2026, capping a week of significant gains for U.S. equity markets. The index rose 3.6% for the week, while the Nasdaq Composite climbed 5.3%. This rally followed the release of a weak jobs report, which led investors to speculate that the Federal Reserve System may delay planned interest rate increases.

Corporate performance remained mixed across various sectors. Airbnb shares surged 17.4% after the company raised its annual revenue and margin forecasts, citing strong demand in Europe and the United States. Microchip Technology also saw gains of nearly 14% after beating analyst estimates for second-quarter adjusted earnings per share.

Other companies faced sharp declines. The Trade Desk shares plummeted 22% after missing third-quarter revenue estimates. Under Armour shares fell 4.5% following a forecasted revenue decline and softening demand. Additionally, Sweetgreen shares dropped 8% after the company downgraded its annual net sales forecast, a move attributed to a Cyclospora outbreak affecting packaged lettuce.
