Target Reports Sales Growth and Nearly $1 Billion Tariff Refund

Target Corporation reported a second straight quarter of sales growth and raised its full-year outlook following a $994 million government tariff refund.

Target Corporation reported second-quarter net sales of $26.54 billion, a 5.3% increase that ended a five-quarter streak of declines. Net income reached approximately $1.88 billion, significantly exceeding Wall Street expectations. This profit was heavily bolstered by a $994 million pre-tax tariff refund following a judicial ruling that the Trump administration overstepped its authority when imposing import taxes.

CEO Michael Fiddelke attributed the rebound to a $6 billion turnaround strategy and a merchandising overhaul that included price cuts on over 10,000 items. While the company saw double-digit growth in its Fun 101 category and strong performance in food and beauty, growth in clothing and home goods remained flat. To further drive growth, the retailer is remodeling over 100 stores and launching a Target Beauty Studio concept to replace its partnership with Ulta Beauty, which ends in August.

Following these results, Target raised its full-year net sales growth guidance to approximately 5% and increased its earnings per share outlook to a range of $9.90 to $10.90. The financial report caused the company's stock price to jump 6.23% on August 19. The retailer is currently focusing on the back-to-school season, with 95% of its assortment priced at or below previous year levels.
