iFixit Gives Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 4/10 Repairability Score

iFixit assigned the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 a repairability score of 4/10 following a teardown of the newly released foldable smartphone. The analysis revealed significant design flaws, including an extremely fragile inner screen and a delicate hinge. During the teardown process, a chipped plastic bezel destroyed the foldable OLED layer, and testing showed the hinge fails to protect against fine debris and sand despite its IP4X or IP48 rating, resulting in grinding sounds.

Samsung Electronics designed the device with a 7.6-inch OLED main display, a 5.5-inch cover screen, and a Snapdragon 8 Elite CPU. While the phone offers improved low-light camera performance and a reduced screen crease, it lacks a telephoto zoom lens and the Flex View feature. The device introduces silicon-carbon batteries that provide an 8.8% capacity increase over the previous model, though accessing one of the two batteries requires the removal of the fragile outer display.

Positive findings included the use of standard Phillips/JIS screws and a modular USB-C port. However, iFixit noted that Samsung typically pairs the inner screen and hinge into a single assembly, meaning repairs often require gutting the entire device. This process is further complicated by a current scarcity of official spare parts available to independent repairers.
