Amish Shah Wins Arizona 1st Congressional District Seat

Democrat Amish Shah defeated Republican Jay Feely to win the U.S. House of Representatives seat for Arizona's 1st Congressional District.

Amish Shah won the election Thursday for the U.S. House of Representatives in Arizona's 1st Congressional District. The Democratic candidate, an emergency room doctor and former state legislator, defeated Republican opponent Jay Feely, a former broadcaster and NFL kicker.

The seat was vacated by retiring Representative David Schweikert. Shah had previously run for the position two years ago, narrowly losing to Schweikert in that bid. The Associated Press declared Shah the winner at 12:02 p.m. EST.

In a notable coincidence, both candidates had ties to the New York Jets during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Shah served as a team doctor for the organization while Feely played as a kicker.
