OpenAI Shifts ChatGPT to Recommendation Gateway for Commerce
OpenAI is removing direct payment processing from ChatGPT, transitioning the chatbot into a recommendation gateway that directs users to third-party merchant applications.
OpenAI is pivoting its commerce strategy by retreating from direct agentic commerce, meaning ChatGPT will no longer handle payments, cancellations, refunds, customer complaints, or travel bookings. The company is transitioning the chatbot to serve as a gateway for recommendations rather than a payment processor, a shift highlighted in a TD Cowen research note.
Under this new model, the Instant Checkout feature and attribution tools launched in September are moving into third-party applications. ChatGPT will now direct shoppers to external merchant apps to complete their purchases. To facilitate these transactions, the company has established partnerships and integrations with Shopify, Stripe, PayPal, and Etsy.
This strategic shift is likely intended to reduce the risks and liabilities associated with payment processing, specifically regarding fraud and shipping management. While CEO Sam Altman has not publicly confirmed the change, he has discussed a strategy that supports merchants who prefer to maintain their own customer relationships and checkout processes.
