U.S. Navy Evacuates 1,500 Personnel and Families from Bahrain

The United States Navy evacuated at least 1,500 troops and their families from its 5th Fleet base in Bahrain following the outbreak of war with Iran in late February. Because the base remains a target for Iranian attacks, officials indicate that returning families to the region is not currently possible.

Many evacuees are now stationed on temporary duty, a status that renders them ineligible for base housing or rental assistance. This has forced numerous families into hotels in cities such as Tampa, Florida, and Norfolk, Virginia. These displaced personnel face significant financial strain and difficulties enrolling children in local schools due to missing records.

Admiral Karl Thomas stated that the Navy is reviewing monetary challenges for families on a case-by-case basis, though he noted that current tensions make reopening the base to families "not an option." In Tampa, the advocacy group Blue Star Families has stepped in to provide food and school supplies to children who left Bahrain too quickly to gather necessary materials.
