Yiaga Africa Survey Warns of Low 2027 Voter Turnout

Yiaga Africa reports that while 84% of Nigerians intend to vote in 2027, fear of violence and distrust in INEC threaten actual turnout.

Yiaga Africa released the third round of its National Voting Intentions Survey on October 7, 2026, finding that 84% of Nigerians are likely or very likely to vote in the 2027 general elections. Despite this intent, the organization warns that significant barriers could prevent citizens from reaching the polls.

Survey data from 2,470 citizens shows that 61% of respondents fear electoral violence, while confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission has fallen to 34%. Economic hardship is a primary driver for voters, with 71% rating the economy as poor or very poor and 49% motivated by a desire for leadership change. Young voters reported the lowest levels of commitment and the highest levels of distrust.

In response to these findings, Yiaga Africa called on the Federal Government to publish a national election security plan by November 2026. The organization also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to commit to real-time result uploads to the IReV portal and requested that the judiciary resolve candidacy disputes before ballots are printed.
