Thousands Join National Voter Registration Day for November Elections

Thousands of volunteers and government agencies observed National Voter Registration Day on September 15, 2026, to encourage eligible Americans to register for the November 3 general election. Organized by Nonprofit VOTE, the nonpartisan initiative utilized coordinated field, digital, and media actions across every state to increase voter participation and education.

State officials implemented various registration pushes. In Tennessee, Secretary of State Tre Hargett promoted the GoVoteTN app, while Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar noted a narrowing party registration gap, with Democrats holding a slim lead of only 672 voters over Republicans. South Carolina's Executive Director Conway Belangia urged residents to verify their details to avoid last-minute complications. In California, officials highlighted same-day registration options for those who miss the October 19 deadline.

Local efforts included extended hours at the Hockley County Election Office in Levelland, Texas, and community events in Smith County, Texas, hosted by the League of Women Voters and Este Poder. In Virginia, volunteers provided in-person assistance at the Blacksburg Library. These drives focused on navigating state-specific rules, such as Texas' lack of online registration and North Carolina's October 9 deadline.

Following the September 15 events, organizers plan to transition toward Get Out The Vote campaigns for the remaining seven weeks before the election. The initiative coincided with Civic Engagement Week, which began September 14 to promote broader democratic participation.
