Axel Springer Proposed Stake in TikTok European Operations

Axel Springer proposed acquiring a stake in TikTok's European operations to shift ownership toward democratic shareholders, but ByteDance dismissed the proposal.

Axel Springer, the media group owning Politico and The Telegraph, proposed acquiring a stake in TikTok's European operations to move the platform toward democratic ownership. Chief Executive Mathias Döpfner floated the idea during a January meeting in Berlin with Charles Kushner, the U.S. ambassador to France, and later communicated the proposal to European Commission officials.

Döpfner argued that the acquisition was necessary to prevent the platform from serving as a vehicle for propaganda. The proposal mirrored the restructuring of TikTok's U.S. operations, which utilized a $14 billion joint venture led by Oracle to address national security concerns regarding Chinese ownership.

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, dismissed the notion and stated that no formal acquisition discussions had taken place. The proposal failed to gain traction with the European Commission.
