Indian Refiners Negotiate Iranian Oil Supplies Ahead of Sanctions Deadline

Indian state-run refiners are discussing future Iranian crude imports as a U.S. sanctions waiver expires on August 21.

Indian state-run refiners are conducting talks with traders to secure Iranian crude oil imports beyond August 21, the current expiration date for a 60-day sanctions waiver granted by the United States government. Indian processors have already fully contracted their oil needs through August, having stockpiled supplies during the Middle East war.

Negotiations for September deliveries are expected to begin in the coming weeks, though outcomes remain dependent on the results of peace discussions between the United States and Iran. Current market conditions have made Iranian oil less attractive, as a ceasefire in the Strait of Hormuz has lowered prices for unsanctioned Middle Eastern grades and Russian Urals oil continues to trade at deeper discounts.

These efforts follow a meeting last month in New Delhi during the BRICS Energy Summit. During that summit, India's Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Iran's Petroleum Minister Mohsen Paknejad met to discuss expanding energy sector cooperation and partnership opportunities.
