Alphabet Spends $51.4 Billion on AI Infrastructure Build-Out
Alphabet Inc. invested $51.4 billion in AI compute last quarter, raising $40 billion in capital to fund the expansion.
Alphabet Inc. spent $51.4 billion in the last quarter to fund an artificial intelligence compute build-out. The company is currently spending more cash than it generates, necessitating the raising of $40 billion in equity and debt during the same period to support these investments.
Shares tumbled following the third-quarter earnings release due to the high spending levels. CFO Anat Ashkenazi defended the strategy, stating that the company expects to generate an attractive return on invested capital that remains "meaningfully above our cost of capital."
Alphabet is utilizing vertical integration, including its own Tensor Processing Unit chips and frontier large language models, to accelerate returns. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian reported that server spending has a payback period of less than two years, while TPU systems pay back in less than one year. Amid these developments, Berkshire Hathaway initiated a position in Alphabet stock, establishing it as the firm's fourth-largest marketable equity holding.
