Petition Seeks to Bar Mayor Zohran Mamdani from 9/11 Ceremonies

Giovanni Galante launched a petition to exclude New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani from 9/11 remembrance events, sparking a media dispute over signature counts.

Giovanni Galante launched a petition calling for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to be barred from the 25th-anniversary 9/11 remembrance ceremonies. The petition garnered approximately 25,000 signatures based on concerns regarding Mamdani's public positions, specifically his association with streamer Hasan Piker and an alleged reluctance to condemn the phrase "globalise the intifada".

The effort led to a journalistic controversy involving the New York Post and CBS News New York. Both outlets initially reported that thousands of 9/11 victims' families had signed the petition. However, journalist Judd Legum challenged these figures, noting that organizers could not verify the count and that the New York Post's own text referenced an estimate of only 300 families.

Following Legum's inquiry, CBS News New York edited its coverage to state that the petition "purportedly" drew thousands of signatures, including some victims' families.
