Taiwan Restores Anti-Communist Education Amid Rising Chinese Pressure

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense reinstated anti-communist patriotic education for military graduates to counter Beijing's infiltration and increased maritime mobilization.

The Ministry of National Defense of Taiwan has restored the "Anti-communist Patriotic Education" program for newly commissioned military officers, reviving the original name of a curriculum that had been called "patriotic education" since 2002. The compulsory five-day course, which began on July 1 at the National Defense University's Fuxinggang campus, targets graduates from eight military academies. The program is designed to help officers distinguish between friend and foe and understand the mission of "why we fight, and for whom we fight."

The policy shift comes as Taiwan faces intensifying military pressure, including "gray-zone" operations and espionage threats. President Lai Ching-te addressed graduates on June 30, urging them to resist Beijing's attempts to divide and sabotage the armed forces. The training includes lectures from the Mainland Affairs Council, the National Security Council, the Ministry of Justice, and Academia Sinica, focusing on cognitive warfare, recruitment operations, and the implications of Beijing's legal tactics, such as the 2026 Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law.

This educational pivot coincides with a surge in Chinese naval activity. Joseph Wu, secretary-general of the National Security Council, reported that over 110 Chinese military and Coast Guard ships were tracked along the First Island Chain as of July 3. Tensions escalated further on July 4 when the China Coast Guard launched a patrol off Taiwan's east coast, which Taipei rejected as an illegal exercise of jurisdiction.
