Philip Morris Beats Q3 Estimates Amid Global Conflict Warnings

Philip Morris International reported third-quarter profits exceeding Wall Street estimates while warning that wars in Ukraine and the Middle East are inflating operational costs.

Philip Morris International reported third-quarter adjusted profits of $2.36 per share, surpassing Wall Street expectations. The company attributed growth in its cigarette business to tobacco price increases and strong demand in Turkey and Indonesia.

Despite the financial beat, the company warned that global conflicts are creating significant headwinds. The war in the Middle East has driven prices higher, while the war in Ukraine has caused strikes and operational disruptions to supply chain infrastructure. Energy-related inflation is further increasing the cost base, a pressure the company expects will weigh on operating income through the end of the year.

In the United States, sales of Zyn nicotine pouches grew by 4.2%, representing a slowdown compared to previous periods. The company attributed this deceleration to competition from British American Tobacco's Velo brand. To regain momentum, Philip Morris plans to increase investments in Zyn, which includes raising the pouch count per can from 15 to 20 for most of the product range.
