UK and EU Discuss Restoring Security Database Access

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood meets EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner to discuss rejoining security databases and improving border management cooperation.

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will meet EU Home Affairs Commissioner Magnus Brunner on Monday to negotiate the restoration of UK access to critical law enforcement databases. The discussions center on the Schengen Information System (SIS) and the new Eurodac migration database, from which the UK was excluded following Brexit.

Brunner's visit includes meetings with MI5 Director General Ken McCallum and officials from the UK's child sexual abuse center to coordinate on counter-terrorism and law enforcement. The talks follow calls from Andy Burnham to restore data sharing as a means of regaining control over security and immigration.

The diplomatic engagement occurs amid a reported 43% decline in small boat crossings in the English Channel. Brunner attributes this decrease to the EU's new Pact on Migration and Asylum and shifting political priorities within France, Italy, and Germany. He noted that illegal crossings at EU external borders have dropped 55% over two years, with asylum applications reaching record lows in former primary destination countries.
