DNC Elevates Virginia to Sixth Position in 2028 Primary

The Rules and Bylaws Committee of the Democratic National Committee has reorganized the 2028 presidential primary calendar, elevating Virginia to the sixth voting position on February 29, 2028. The state will follow South Carolina, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Michigan. This reorganization removes Iowa from the early-state lineup in an effort to prioritize states with diverse populations, particularly Black and Latino voters, that more closely mirror the party's national coalition.

DNC Chair Ken Martin defended the shift, stating the new calendar is intended to battle test candidates and ensure that voters, rather than money, serve as the ultimate deciders. The move transitions Virginia from its traditional Super Tuesday slot in March to late February, a shift intended to grant the state a more decisive role before a front-runner necessarily emerges.

Virginia officials supported the decision. U.S. Senator Mark Warner argued that the state's diversity makes it a critical test for national electability, while former Governor Terry McAuliffe noted that the mother of presidents deserves a prominent role. These leaders contend that a candidate capable of competing in Virginia can compete anywhere.
