Russia and United States Negotiate New Prisoner Exchange
Russia and the United States are discussing a humanitarian prisoner swap to build goodwill and trust between the two nations.
The Federal government of the United States and the Federal Government of Russia are negotiating a potential new prisoner exchange aimed at fostering trust and goodwill between the two countries. This effort follows previous successful swaps under the Donald Trump administration that secured the release of individuals including Marc Fogel and Ksenia Karelina.
In late October, Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev met with U.S. officials, including special envoy Steve Witkoff, in Washington to discuss humanitarian issues and possible swaps. The U.S. has reportedly provided Russia with a list of eight to nine Americans it seeks to secure, including individuals detained on charges of espionage, mercenary activity, and drug smuggling.
A senior U.S. official described the atmosphere of the discussions as constructive, though they cautioned that an agreement has not yet been reached and a final outcome is not imminent.
