Heathrow Expansion Threatens England's Largest Medieval Barn

Campaigners warn that Heathrow Airport's proposed third runway threatens the 15th-century New Barn at Harmondsworth with structural damage from aircraft vibrations.

Campaigners and heritage experts are warning that the proposed construction of a third runway at Heathrow Airport threatens the New Barn at Harmondsworth, the largest surviving medieval timber-framed barn in England. Built in 1426, the structure sits a few hundred metres from the proposed airport boundary.

Justine Bayley, chair of the Stop Heathrow Expansion campaign, argues that aircraft vibrations could shake the building to pieces, citing similar issues already occurring in the nearby village of Longford. Bayley claims the government is prioritizing infrastructure over environmental and heritage protections, suggesting that climate and environmental legislation is being ignored to ensure the expansion proceeds.

A spokesperson for Heathrow Airport stated that the barn is located outside the new airport boundary and that potential impacts will be reviewed. The airport operator has committed to working with local communities and conducting its own public consultation later this year.

The Department for Transport is currently consulting on amendments to the Heathrow expansion national policy statement, with a deadline for public objections set for 1 September. The department stated that views on the potential impacts to the environment, heritage sites, and neighbouring communities will be carefully considered before any final decisions are made.
