Stellantis Unveils Affordable Electric 2CV to Counter Chinese Rivals
Stellantis revealed a retro-styled electric Citroen 2CV concept at the Paris Motor Show, targeting a 2028 launch with a price under 15,000 euros.
Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa unveiled a series of concept cars and production models at a gala event ahead of the Paris Motor Show to signal a recovery strategy following declining market share in Europe and North America. The centerpiece of the presentation is a retro-styled Citroen 2CV concept, which previews a low-cost electric vehicle expected to launch in 2028 with a starting price of approximately 15,000 euros or less.
The passenger 2CV Concept is a 3.76-meter city runabout featuring a retractable fabric roof, a target weight of one tonne, and an anticipated range between 130 and 150 miles. Its interior blends modern technology, including an eight-inch infotainment display, with retro elements like tartan upholstery and a single-spoke steering wheel. Citroen also revealed the 2CV Fourgonnette, a design study reimagining the 1951 panel van as an electric workhorse, though the company stated this specific model is not a preview for a future production vehicle.
This initiative is part of a broader 2030 business plan focused on cost cuts and distinct brand identities to compete with low-cost Chinese automakers. To maintain affordability, Citroen intends to leverage European Union E-car regulations for vehicles under 4.2 meters. Other premieres at the event included models from DS, Fiat, Lancia, Opel, and Chinese partner Leapmotor. Design chief Gilles Vidal noted that the concepts are intended to reinforce the unique identity of each brand within the Stellantis portfolio.
